Description

M101 is a large, spiral galaxy containing around a trillion stars. It has a diameter of 170,000 light-years (c.f. our Milky Way with a diameter of 100,000 to 120,000 light-years).

Supernova SN 2023ixf was first observed on May 19, 2023. It is classified as a type II (core collapse) supernova and is expected to have left behind either a neutron star or black hole. When I observed M101, SN 2023ixf was the brightest object in the galaxy.

This is an LRGBHa capture.
